11 October: Rest

31 days of free writes oct 11, rest

Day 11 of Kate Motaung's October 2015 edition of 31 days of free writes. More than ⅓ of the way through the month!

Sunday 11 October: Rest

The button pic Kate provided for today illustrates very well the types of activity we need to put aside for a time or two or three of rest. I could say something about the sabbath that scripture mandates as a day of ceasing from producing, consuming, counting – and even creating – but that's more of a technical theological consideration—though not one exclusive to Jews and Christians. "Rest" reminds me of the necessity of rests when you play music or listen to music. Those silent spaces between the notes add immeasurably (notice my word) to the beauty of the music. Sometimes in music we'll insert agogic accents into a phrase we're playing. That's a very brief silence or rest that creates an accented emphasis on the note that follows.

I especially appreciate that Kate's picture includes a phone and a camera, essentials for social networking and for creativity. My phone camera is only a modest 3MP that's fine for screen display, but since I want to be able to use my own photography in my design my 16MP camera goes with me everywhere. We need to rest from gear and gadgets, sites and devices that help us connect to others, that add relational meaning to our lives.

End of 5 minutes, but this could be a post to develop later on.

  2. thanks! this is one where I noticed my thoughts were fine, but reordering a lot of the sentences would make it a lot better. Really hard leaving stuff as is when I'd typically edit a normal blog post, but I need to trust people realize it's free and unedited ;)
