#Write31Days 07 • Nahant

Short Beach, Nahant, Massachusetts

Massachusetts

A single square mile makes Nahant the smallest town in the state of Massachusetts. Nahant is a land-tied island, so like Cape Cod, it's effectively a peninsula. Southeast of the industrial city of Lynn and the residential town of Swampscott, Nahant's not on the Lynn – Swampscott – Salem – Beverly station roll as the commuter train glides up the north shore of Boston because trains don't travel there, but you can drive, bus, or rail into Lynn on your trip to Nahant that's a destination in itself.

I spent a summer in Nahant working as an au pair for a family of two parents, three kids, one grandmother and a canine named Frisky. That long-ago summer included days on the beach {typically a split day with a morning session and one in the afternoon}, evenings creating art at the dining room table. Sunday mornings I walked to church with the au pair from a family that had been long-time friends with my host/employer family. You've heard of the Los Angeles – Long Beach – Anaheim Metropolitan Statistical Area? Nahant has a Short Beach! You can listen to Randall Thompson's Fantasy for Orchestra, A Trip to Nahant and catch the town spirit.
